1. Passports and Visas

When you travel overseas make sure you have a valid passport and other documentation required to satisfy country entry requirements. Depending on your passport nationality and destination, additional requirements may include visas, return or onward tickets and sufficient funds for your stay.
If your travel documentation is incomplete or inadequate you will not be allowed to board the aircraft at the start of your journey. To avoid any inconvenience, please check that you meet the requirements for your destination(s) as well as any countries you will pass through in transit.

2. Travel Insurance

It is strongly recommend that you take travel insurance for the entire time you plan to be overseas. Your policy should cover emergency medical situations, baggage loss or damage, and expenses incurred from disrupted travel plans.

3. Requesting Seating and Meals

You can request your own seat(s) for all international flights with Air New Zealand, at no extra charge.

Air New Zealand offers a choice of 22 special meals on our long-haul international flights for customers with specific religious, ethnic or dietary requirements. If you need meals at specific times for medical reasons, please let the flight attendants know soon after you have boarded and they will make the necessary arrangements. If you have a serious food allergy, please read the airline’s Allergy Alert message.

4. Change of Plans

If your travel plans change, no matter how late, please let Air New Zealand or your travel agent know immediately. Someone else may need a seat, and your call could make the difference! Sometimes changes to your travel plans are unavoidable. Depending on when such changes are made and your ticket type, associated cancellation or change penalties may or may not apply.

5. At the Airport

The greeting you will receive when you check-in for your Air New Zealand flight may be your first contact with our airline. Our aim is for your check-in process to be friendly, easy and efficient. Air New Zealand would like to offer some helpful reminders to make your next trip with us more enjoyable.

International Flights
You are required to complete final check-in no later than ninety (90) minutes before your international flight is due to depart. However, due to increased security requirements on all flights operating to, through and from the USA, we recommended you allow at least 2 hours to complete your check-in.

Domestic New Zealand Flights

You are required to be checked in thirty (30) minutes before the departure of your domestic New Zealand flight, unless you are connecting to an international flight. In that case, please be checked in sixty (60) minutes prior to the departure of your domestic flight. Please remember to carry proof of identity with you as you will be required to present this at check-in. A passport, driver's license, Airpoints or Koru Club card, credit card or birth certificate are all suitable forms of identification. Please note that several airports levy a departure tax on all passengers on domestic flights.

Domestic New Zealand Flights with International Connections

If you are checking in at a domestic New Zealand airport and you will be making a connection to an international flight, please be checked in sixty (60) minutes prior to the departure of your domestic flight. Remember your ticket and passport, ensure you have all applicable visas and please note that many airports levy a departure tax on all passengers on international flights.

IMPORTANT SECURITY ADVICE TO CUSTOMERS
Security Seized Items on All Flights
In order to comply with the new USA Federal Aviation Authority and New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority security regulations, it is mandatory that no customer carries knives, cutting instruments, sharp objects of any description or composition and novelty items such as toy guns or weapons into the cabin of any Air New Zealand Domestic or International aircraft.

Customers are advised that if such items are required by them they are to be packed into checked baggage. They are not to be carried in cabin baggage or on their person under any circumstances.
Customers found to be carrying any implements as described above during airport security checks will be required to surrender them. Regrettably such items cannot be returned to customers. Needles and syringes are exempt from the above if the customer also has in their possession medication that has a professionally printed label identifying the medication, a manufacturers name or pharmaceutical label.

6. Baggage Policies

Carry-on Baggage Policy for flights to, from and through the USA
Due to the current security processing required by the USA Federal Aviation Administration, passengers travelling in all classes are allowed to bring only one piece of carry-on baggage, not to exceed 115cm or weigh in excess of 7kg, plus one personal item such as a purse, lap top or briefcase.
Make the most of checked-in baggage limits by pooling baggage with others in your travelling party. Just ensure you check in together.

Check your free baggage allowance below. Baggage limits vary depending on where you are travelling. The allowances below apply to Air New Zealand operated flights only. If your flight is operated by an Air New Zealand codeshare partner, you will need to check your baggage allowance with the other airline.

If your itinerary also involves flights operated by another airline/s, please refer directly to them for their allowance.

The maximum weight limit of 32kg (70lbs) for any individual  piece of baggage is an industry standard.  It does not relate to your overall entitlement but is a safety measure to reduce injuries to baggage handling staff.  Any item over 32 kg will require repacking.
Each piece of baggage should not exceed total dimensions (length + width + height) of 158cm (62")

Excess Baggage
a. Excess baggage charges apply when a traveler's checked-in baggage exceeds the free allowance either by weight or by the number of pieces permitted.

c. For flights within New Zealand, excess baggage is charged per extra piece over the permitted allowance.
d. Flights between New Zealand, Australia, the Cook Islands, Fiji, Norfolk Island, Samoa, Tonga and Noumea, excess baggage is charged per kilogram over the permitted allowance.
e. For international journeys, excess baggage rates vary depending on the destination.
f. If you are travelling with excess baggage, please remember to allow sufficient time to complete the necessary formalities at check-in and also remember your excess baggage will be carried subject to space availability on your flight. As an alternative to paying excess baggage charges you may wish to consider sending any clothes or personal items as unaccompanied baggage.

Cabin Baggage
You are welcome to bring your belongings on board as carry on baggage, with maximum allowances and restrictions detailed below.

The allowances stated below apply to Air New Zealand operated flights only. If your flight is operated by an Air New Zealand partner airline, you will need to check your allowance with the airline operating the service.
In addition to your allowance, you may also carry on board personal items such as an overcoat, handbag, walking stick, camera or laptop. As a safety precaution, all cabin baggage must be able to fit in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you.
Anything in excess of the dimensions and weight allowed as listed below will need to be repacked as part of your checked baggage allowance.
To find out if certain items may be taken on board, please check restricted items. Please note there are restrictions on using electronic equipment on board.
If you are travelling to, from or via the UK or US, please consult the airline’s information regarding current carry-on baggage restrictions.

Connecting with Other Airlines
If you have a connecting flight with another airline, your baggage may be through-checked if Air New Zealand has an interline agreement with the other airline. Your flights must also all be on the same ticket. If your flights are ticketed separately, baggage may only be through-checked if your tickets are issued in conjunction with each other. Please contact your booking agent if you are unsure whether your baggage may be through-checked.

Unacceptable Items

Air New Zealand advises that the following items should not be included in your checked baggage and Air New Zealand accepts no liability for their damage or loss unless the items are identified and Air New Zealand has in writing accepted them for carriage:
    Cash or other valuable documents
    Jewellery, precious metals
Any item of a fragile or brittle nature, e.g. glassware
Electronics, e.g. computers, cameras, personal electronic devices
    Samples
Any item that has insufficient packaging to withstand the normal circumstances and effects of carriage by air

Oversized Items and Sporting Equipment
The details stated below apply to Air New Zealand operated flights only. If your flight is operated by an Air New Zealand partner airline, you will need to check the rates with the airline operating the service.

Oversized Items
If you are travelling with items that exceed maximum dimensions for checked baggage, these are classified as oversized.
Examples of oversized items are bicycles, surfboards, hang-gliders and wind-surfers. Since these are larger items, carriage will be subject to availability of space on the aircraft.
The following items may be considered as one standard piece of baggage:
Any portable musical instrument not exceeding 100cm in length
    One bicycle
    One surfboard
    One pair of snow skis
    One snowboard
    One pair of water skis
One golf bag containing golf clubs and one pair of shoes
Please note there is a maximum weight restriction of 32kg (70 lbs) per item and length restrictions also apply.

Sporting Equipment
Sporting equipment is defined as a bag or piece of equipment obviously dedicated to the pursuit of sporting activity.
For travel in New Zealand the checked baggage allowance is 1 piece up to 25kgs. free.

Domestic New Zealand Flights
Sporting equipment is counted as a piece of luggage. Therefore once the allowance has been exceeded, domestic piece charges will apply.

Flights to/from the US, Canada or Tahiti and Flights between NZ and London via Los Angeles
Items of sporting equipment – for example golf clubs, skis, snowboards, bicycles and surfboards – are included as part of the standard piece allowance. Excess baggage charges apply once the standard has been exceeded.

Bicycles
Bicycles can be checked in as part of your baggage allowance provided they are correctly packed. As a minimum, turn in and remove handlebars and pedals. On bicycles where the pedals cannot be turned in or removed, sufficient padding must be provided around the petals to prevent the pedals damaging other customers’ baggage.
Wrap the whole bicycle in a plastic bag, corrugated cardboard or equivalent. Alternatively the bike may be packaged in a purpose built bike box
If necessary, wrap the chain to prevent grease transferring to other baggage
Deflation of the tires is not necessary.
Some bicycle items may be classed as dangerous goods. For example, CO2 cartridges for inflating bicycle tires contain compressed gas and are not permitted as checked or cabin baggage.
Mountain bikes may be fitted with struts containing compressed nitrogen gas. These bikes can only be accepted as checked baggage if the gas pressure does not exceed 200KPa (Kilopascal), or 29 PSI (Pounds per square inch).

Length Restrictions
The maximum length per piece on jet aircraft is 2.5 meters however this may be reduced depending on the width and height of the item.
If your oversized item is not one of the examples listed above and the width is over 1 meter, we recommend that you check with our specialist team at Air New Zealand Cargo to ascertain if your piece will fit on our aircraft. You will need to supply the length, width and height of your item.
Similarly the aircraft operated on Link services have a maximum length of 1.8 meters.  If your package dimensions exceed - Length 1.8m x Width 0.8m x Height 1.20 m, please contact your local Air New Zealand office for assistance. There may be occasions when items such as poles, skis, fishing rods etc may still be accepted on Air New Zealand Link aircraft up to 2.2m (7' 2") due to their minimal volume.
If you are travelling on a combination of aircraft, the smallest aircraft in your journey will determine the maximum length or width that can be accepted. Oversized items are still carried subject to space availability.
If you wish to travel with an item that exceeds the allowable package dimensions, you will need to consider making alternative freighting arrangements for this item. Air New Zealand Cargo, or your local freight forwarder, can advise you on alternative arrangements. Applicable rates will apply and items sent via Air New Zealand Cargo or a local freight forwarder may not necessarily travel on the same aircraft as you due to space availability.
