Things To Do
While the Cook Islands may appear small in physical stature on the world map, these 15 tiny Pacific islands are abundant in the range of things to experience. In fact, the Cook Islands offers new adventures and activities to immerse yourself in that will invigorate, challenge, educate and inspire you.
Beyond the obvious attractions of snorkeling and diving amongst the colorful marine life in our turquoise lagoons, there are a host of other land and sea based experiences, from chartering your own game-fishing vessel, to island discovery tours that showcase the culture and explore important heritage sites that are unique and sacred to the ancient Cook Island people.
The Cook Islands have a long history of traditional Arts that are as much an integral part of
their culture as their song and dance. From the ceremonial decoration that adorned their Ocean Voyaging Canoes, tools and war weapons to the art of Tattoo, Tivaevae (quilting), the weaving of hats, baskets and fans they have a vibrant commitment that these traditional arts will not be lost .
A must see highlight when in the Cook Islands is to attend an “Island Night” cultural dance performance. These are held at the various resort venues around the islands. You’ll savor an authenticumu kai feast made of local ingredients cooked in a specially prepared earth-oven. Then be enthralled with a night of sensuous dance, colorful costumes, rhythmic drumming and string band accompaniment. And don’t be shy when asked to join the dancing at the end of each show.

4. Scuba Diving
Dive Rarotonga
You can choose your dive times and even choose your dive site, weather permitting. They offer morning and afternoon dive trips, so you can choose the best time to suit you. They dive 4 times a day with the main dive times at 8:00am and 1:30pm, 7 days a week. You can choose to do a single dive or a two-tank dive at either of these times - the choice is yours!
Dive Centre
Rarotonga's clear, warm waters with fantastic visibility and diversity of marine life make it excellent for diving and snorkeling. If you've never been diving before there are PADI qualified instructors at The Dive Centre who can give expert instruction.
Outside of the reef, there is a diverse range of diving including precipitous drop-offs, a variety of rays, sharks, turtles, whales, canyons, caves, tunnels and shipwrecks (well broken up).
The reef drop-off goes from about 20-30 meters down to 4000 meters. Diving is done at 5 to 30m where visibility is 20 to 60m
(65 - 200 feet) depending on weather and wind conditions. Water temperatures range between 23 - 30 degrees Celsius (winter to summer). Another welcome feature of diving off Rarotonga are the short trips in purpose-built boats - often no more than 10 minutes to superb dive sites - and as the island of Rarotonga is circular there are almost always sheltered spots for diving with good visibility.
Cook Island Divers
Cook Island Divers was the first dive company established in the Cook Islands and has been run by the same owner, Greg Wilson, since day one. Cook Island Divers has been built up and improved over the years to stay on the cutting edge of the dive industry worldwide.
Cook Island Divers is very proud of the fact that it was voted into the top 5 Pacific Dive Operators for Resorts in the inaugural Rodale’s Scuba Diving Readers choice poll. This is significant, given the small size of the destination. They are also the only internationally registered Dive Operation in the Cooks holding affiliation with PIRA (PADI International Resort Association).
Highland Paradise
In the mid 1980s, the late Raymond Pirangi Senior , a Rangatira ( subchief from the prominent Rarotongan Tinomana Tribe, took it upon himself to set out to reclaim his heritage from the daunting dense bush and steep hillsides of Maungaroa. His dream and determination to share all this with the rest of the world has resulted in the resurrection of one of the Cook Islands most important historic sites. Located high up in the rugged mountains of Rarotonga, overlooking the aqua lagoon, fringing coral reef and Pacific Ocean, this unspoiled, breathtaking 205-acre site is of significant cultural renown. It was a safe spiritual and fortress haven for families, warriors and the Tinomana chiefly line for countless hundreds of years. The Highland Paradise Cultural Centre offers a truly
interactive experience for locals and visitors alike. Here, you will personally relive our Polynesian heritage through self-guided or interactive guided strolling tours amongst the lush gardens, village remains, replica ares (houses), historical areas of great significance and towering native trees. And to add the overall experience, you may participate in our traditional sunset feast and show.
Open: 9.00 am and 3.00 pm Monday - Saturday
Tour Times: 10.00 am. Sunset Cultural Show: Wednesday
Pacific Divers
Established 15 years ago and currently operated by Steve Lyon, Pacific Divers offers a comprehensive diving service catering for all levels. Dives include coral terrain dives, canyons, drop offs and drifts. Fish life is varied and include Hawksbill and Green turtles, White Tip and Grey Reef sharks, Napoleon Wrasse, Giant Moray, Giant Clams and the myriad of reef fish and invertebrates. With all coasts being accessible, they are able to operate in almost any weather.
Pacific Divers operate excursions everyday starting at 8:30am, Monday to Saturday and 12:30pm on Sunday. You can either do one or two dives on these excursions and there are also trips for certified divers only. Monday to Saturday afternoons are used primarily for training dives (Open Water and Discover Scuba) and are at shallower sites than the morning trips. Certified divers are welcome as well and these sites provide good opportunities for underwater photography.
Included in the rates are all equipment, refreshments between dives and a light snack following diving, dive computers for all divers and transfers to and from Pacific Divers. The dive staff takes digital photos on all dive trips. These are made available to you on CD. One CD will contain dives from 3 or 4 day diving plus slide show and a library of better images.
