2- Diving

Trying to sum up the special appeal of these waters is like editing years of underwater video into just 30 minutes of tape!
Of course, most people know Fiji as the “Soft Coral Capital of the World” and that’s true! But soft corals are only a symbol of Fiji’s complete story: the soft corals vibrant colors and giant size, over 700 types of fish and invertebrates that live amongst them, the dramatic changes they undergo in an ancient rhythm of survival with the tides and currents, and the many types of underwater environments in which they thrive.
Yes, Fiji’s remarkable soft corals embody all the elements that make Fiji’s reefs so exceptional. Drama and diversity, brilliant lavish panoramas, deep water rich with food and hiding places for the mysterious and rare Fiji’s marine realm is as dynamic and splendid as nature can be.
The North, particularly the area around Vanua Levu and between it and neighboring Taveuni – the Somosomo Strait, first put Fiji on the international dive map. The resorts here, originally were developed to cater to one trade – divers. Expanse walls of multi-hued corals are what drew pioneers such as Cousteau and Cammick to the area. But exploration to other areas such as Kadavu, Beqa Lagoon, and the Mamanucas helped make Fiji a “must-stop” for divers worldwide.
Diving is possible year-round with optimal conditions during the months of March through December. Water temperatures may vary from about 75F (24C) during June through August (wetsuits are recommended) to 86F (30C) from December to February. Most resorts offer PADI approved certification courses from beginner to master diver. There are even courses for children as young as 8 years old and “resort courses” best for those who only want to sample the undersea world.
3- Sport Fishing
With 330 islands, fishing is more than a sport – it’s a way of life. Fiji’s abundant marine life is found in the reefs and lagoons that surround the islands. Angelfish, clown fish damselfish, groupers, triggerfish and thousands more thrive among the protective corals.
Larger species such as barracuda, parrot fish, snapper, stingrays and small sharks inhabit lagoons usually less than 100 ft. (30 m) deep. In open water, you will find mahimahi, skipjack, trevally, tuna, swordfish and larger sharks.
The most common food fish is the walu (white butterfish), abundant in these waters.
Sport fishing trips can be organized through resorts or recommended operators. Prices range from FJD500 – 900 for a half/full day, up to 4 people, aboard a fast game-fishing boat with equipment. A number of game fishing tournaments are scheduled between March and October throughout the islands.
