Hunter Valley
A two-hour drive north of Sydney or one hour from Newcastle is Australia’s oldest wine growing area of the Hunter Valley. Over 120 wineries produce award-winning wines, including the signature wine of the Hunter Valley, Semillon and the popular Shiraz, Verdelho and Chardonnay. Situated at the base of the Brokenback Ranges, you will find wines from the well known wine-makers, like Penfolds, Tyrrells, and Rosemont. As well there are numerous small and boutique wineries, who are receiving accolades worldwide for their perfection in the area of blending of wines and emerging styles of wines.

The tranquility of the Hunter Valley makes it easy to explore on your own. However if you would prefer to leave the driving to someone else, you can enjoy the area by horse-drawn cart or a vintage car. If exercise is in the picture, then you can rent a bicycle to explore the different wineries.
To complement wine, the perfect match is food. This area is getting a reputation as a place for gastronomical pursuits. Award winning chefs are opening wonderful gourmet restaurants focusing on the abundant local produce, which includes olives, olive oil and tasty handmade washed rind and white mould cheeses. As well there are a number of cooking schools for improving your cooking skills or to learn about wine pairing.
However, this area is not only for those wanting to sample wonderful food and wine. There are many other activities and things to do. You can enjoy a sunrise hot air balloon over the beautiful valley of this region; or enjoy a scenic helicopter flight that drops you at a private place for a picnic lunch. Vintage airplanes take you for short rides over the valley or you can take a sea-plane up from Sydney for the day.
It is possible to enjoy horseback riding adventures for both the beginner and experienced riders. As well, there are 4-wheel drive wildlife safaris to see the night animals.
There are a number of great golf courses and country clubs to enjoy. And as well, numerous first class spas for relaxing massages or a range of other treatments.

This area has become a mecca for artists so it is fun to explore the smaller galleries looking for interesting pieces of artwork or artifacts. If music is your thing, then enjoy one of the many outdoor concerts, with both local and international stars, set in small amphitheaters on the grounds of different vineyards.
The most popular attraction of the region is the Hunter Valley Gardens. The 25 hectares of beautifully landscaped gardens is enjoyed by all. The gardens change with the seasons is a wonderful place to wander and take pleasure in the 12 themed gardens.
Nearby you have the small towns of Wollombi, Morpeth and Broke, which are popular for visiting galleries, antique and specialty stores or looking for bargains. History can be experienced on the Convict Trail and a must is a visit to the Maitland Gaol.
