The Cook Islands were neither originally named the Cook Islands nor discovered by Captain Cook. The first people to arrive were of Polynesian descent around 500-600 CE. Then, it was re-discovered by Álvaro de Mendaña de Neira, a Spanish Sailor. Captain Cook, who came next, called them the "Hervey Islands." It was Russians who named the islands after Captain Cook.
