Yasawa Islands

This isolated chain of dozens of mostly dry, sun-kissed islands commence about 25 miles northwest of Lautoka and stretch for 50 miles into the southern Pacific Ocean. The Yasawas are famous for crystal blue lagoons which were romanticized in two “Blue Lagoon” movies and featured in countless commercials.

The inhabitants of these islands speak their own dialect (Vuda) and live a simple life of peace and tranquility. This makes the Yasawas a very authentic travel experience and introduction to the real Fiji.

Yasawa Islands

The vast majority of visitors embark for the islands aboard the jet catamaran Yasawa Flyer operated by Awesome Adventures. The Flyer makes stops at key islands with modest accommodations such as Waya, Wayasewa, Kuata and Naviti and ending at Nacula. Another more exciting, albeit expensive way to reach the islands is via the seaplanes of Turtle Airways or Pacific Seaplanes.

Tourism is a relatively recent development in the Yasawas. You can hike across Waya, enjoy kayaking safaris along the entire chain, visit Sawa-i-lau limestone caves or join in a village fish drive (on special occasions).

The islands have a burgeoning tourism accommodations ranging from simple resorts, to two of Fiji’s luxury properties – Turtle Island and the Yasawa Island Resort. If you’re not staying at one of these properties, then cruising with Blue Lagoon is a great way to experience the islands.
