Vaisala is a small village on the northwest coast of Savai’i. The Vaisala Hotel situated at a white sandy beach is one of the largest hotels at the west end of Savai’i.

Auala bay is a conservation area with a turtle habitat which is being managed by the Auala Women’s Committee. There are two churches in the village which has a fairly small coastal frontage fringed by a reef.

Falealupo is a village situated at the west end of Savai’i. The village has two main settlements, Falealupo-Uta, situated inland by the main island highway and Falealupo-Tai, situated by the sea. The road to the coastal settlement is about 9kms (5.4 mi), most of it unsealed, from the main highway. In the sea at the farthest point of the peninsula, the Fafā, an outcropping of volcanic rocks, is said in legend to be the gateway to the underworld Pulotu, where aitu, the spirits of deceased persons, reside.
