Tikehau

Tikehau

Even less developed than other Tuamotu islands but equally intriguing, is Tikehau an escapist’s haven of seclusion. In the Paumotu language, Tikehau means “peaceful landing.” It is set in a circular lagoon 16 miles (26 kms.) in diameter. There are many motus within the lagoon such as Bird Island (Oeoe) and the pink sand beaches on Ohihi. Considered to be one of the most beautiful atolls in Polynesia, the fragrance of the air is matched only by the abundance of life in the bright-blue water. The friendly people, their homes awash with gardens, invite you to share and explore their world beyond imagination.

Tikehau is served by Air Tahiti with frequent non-stop and one-stop flights from Papeete and regular flights from Rangiroa. The non-stop flight time from Papeete is just about 1 hour and the flight time from Rangiroa is 20 minutes.

The airport is located between the Pearl Resort and the main village of Tuherahera. Transport to and from the airport can be reserved by your travel agent. Visiting the main village requires a boat that can be arranged by the resort. The old village was destroyed by a cyclone in 1906 after which residents moved to higher ground and built their homes on the protected sothwest side of the island at Tuherahera. There is a town hall (mairie), a few stores, a school, 3 churches and most of the guest houses. There is no bank in Tikehau, so money is exchangeable at the resort or be sure to bring it before reaching the island.

In Tikehau, fish seem to outnumber people a billion-to one. In fact the density of the fish in the lagoon is so high that Jacques Cousteau’s research group declared it contained the highest concentration of fish among any other Tuamotu atolls.

Obviously fishing is among the primary industries here for the 400 residents. Families share fish parks – underwater fenced areas – where they trap parrotfish and other lagoon species as a primary source of food and income. They also ship fish by air to Papeete for sale in the local markets. Visitors enjoy endless hours of exploring the perfection of the lagoon through snorkeling, diving, and boating and around the village of Tuherahera.

Motu Tiano is the setting for the luxurious, Polynesian styled Tikehau Pearl Beach Resort. The resort’s beautifully appointed Poreho Restaurant sits just a few feet away from the lagoon and specializes in unique French, Polynesian, and international dishes.

With barely a few miles of roads, there is no need for public transportation. For venturing around the village area, walking, scooters, or bicycles are typical and enjoyable. For exploring the lagoon and surrounding motu, motorboat, canoe and sailboat rentals or charters are available from the resort or in the village.
