Mamanuca Islands
Fiji’s prototypical island vacation paradise is the Mamanuca (pronounced Mam-nu-tha) Islands. Some of the most famous Fiji islands resorts, such as Castaway, Treasure Island, Plantation, Mana are located in the Mamanucas.
Mamanuca group, off the western coast of Viti Levu, is a collection of sand-fringed isles set amid striking blue waters. They provide a romantic vacation spot for unforgettable honeymoons, tropical weddings and relaxing holidays for individuals, couples and families. The twenty islands are situated inside a barrier reef which makes the area ideal for boating, snorkeling, diving, sport fishing and a host of other water-related activities.
These islands are kissed with abundant sunshine over 300 days a year and have developed into an important part of the tourism industry. There is usually one resort per island, but some of the larger islands have other smaller properties on their shores.
Kids and family are the backbone of Fijian culture. "Matavuvale" is the Fijian word for family and you'll find the importance of a matavuvale here in everything from family-friendly events to the daily children's learning, play and arts and crafts programs at the resorts. And, you won't have to worry about the kids when you need some time away from them because Fijians are probably the most caring "child-sitters" in the world.
A number of these island resorts are family friendly; among them are Malolo, Plantation and Treasure. Those catering primarily to adults are Likuliku, featuring Fiji’s first overwater bungalows, the new Tadrai (pronounced Tahn-dry); Lomani, Matamonoa, Tokoriki and the decidedly private Vomo. Then there are properties that are flexible to both family and romantic couples: Mana, Musket Cove, with its large yacht harbor and the iconic Castaway.
Deplaning passengers at Nadi will transfer to Port Denarau and board the Tiger 4 jet-catamaran that sails the Mamanucas twice a day with stops at each island. This is the standard transfer method that comes with your Fiji Islands vacation package. However, if you want to make your arrival special, then we can arrange an Island Hoppers helicopter service for a soaring 15-minute flight to most islands.
Two of the islands (Malolo-lai-lai and Mana) have airstrips with regularly scheduled service from Nadi. PacificIslands.com can also arrange private boat transfers to any of the island resorts.
Owing to the close proximity of the Mamanucas to Viti Levu, it is easy for us to add an island resort stay to your Fiji Islands vacation plans. But if time is of the essence, then there are day trips from Port Denarau that include a stop at a private island, picnic lunch and snorkeling, before sailing past of a number of the aforementioned island resorts. Another option, is to travel to Mana Island and board the schooner SeaSpray and spend the day cruising the Mamanuca Islands.
